Women in a Male Dominated Industry

For women, it’s often difficult to get involved in the sports industry as males predominantly dominate the top professional positions. When it’s time for a weekly football game, I’m often ridiculed for not being completely knowledgeable in what I’m watching. Though I may not understand every foul play called, I truly enjoy committing to a team and watching them play every week.
How can women prove themselves in an industry that does not encourage women leadership? I believe that with the increase in technology usage, it may become a little easier. Women and men alike have to start from the bottom and make their way up. Having a wide array of outlets will only increase the chance of women making it up to the higher positions in the sports world.
Today, the five most popular positions for women in sports are:
1.  Coach
2. Athletic Trainer
3. Nutritionist/Dietician
4. Sports Writer
5. Sports Psychologists
The shift will take time for women to become more involved. There aren’t many role models in the industry now, so many young women are leaning more towards careers where there are existing role models. Women must gain the respect of their colleagues to advance in sports professions. Although successful women do not expect all of their male colleagues to respect them, they still work hard. To succeed, you must focus on reaching your goal regardless of industry workers putting you down.
