Short History: Jack Nicklaus

This past weekend, Jordan Speith won his first  Master's tournament hosted in Augusta , Georgia. Being just 21, Speith has a very good chance of winning plenty more. With that being said, Speith has to win 18 more Major Championship in order to become mentioned with the elite. So who earth won 18 times against the best-of -the -best in that time period? Not Tiger. Not Phil. Not anyone except the Grandfather of golf, Jack Nicklaus.

Jack Nicklaus was born and raised Upper Arlington , Ohio. Similar to Speith, Nicklaus also turned professional at a young age. By the time he was 21 , he had won his first major championship victory. At age 25, Nicklaus had two Master's tournament Championships under his belt. Throughout his college tenure, Nicklaus won both the U.S amateur and the NCAA Championship within the same year, going on to win the amateur twice.

Nicklaus has had many, many accomplishments throughout his career. Jack was definitely a winner. Jack , nicknamed "The Golden Bear", went on to quickly grow into stardom after defeating Arnold Palmer for the first time at the Oakmont tournament. At this time, Palmer was a bona-fide star , so the defeat made Nicklaus the new kid on the block. From there, Nicklaus would go on to win plenty of times, mostly competing against Palmer. Between the ages of 24-26, Nicklaus won the Master's tournament back to back. In 1963, Nicklaus approximately earned $200,000 in prize money. As time passed, Nicklaus would continue to increase his winning.

Nicklaus would team up with Palmer to win multiple World of Golf tournaments, and Nicklaus would go on to not only win tournaments, but win in convincing fashion. By the time Nicklaus finished his career, he would go on to be:

-PGA Tour Rookie of the Year
-PGA Tour Player of the Year (5 times)
-#1 Money List Golfer (8 times)
